The Great Orion Nebula Copyright Tony Surma-Hawes I had only purchased a Williams Optics 110mm Magrez ED doublet, in fact it arrived the day before the 2010 Queensland Astrofest opened. Orion in August rises in the wee hours and we only have a narrow window to image it before the sky begins to lighten too much, or the mist rolls in to smother the photons. To be honest, it was starting to get misty during this capture. Mounted on an NEQ6 Pro and taken with the WO 110 ED Magrez @ f4.95, Modded 450D (Baader IR/UV), 5 x 180sec ISO 800, 4 x 180 seconds, ISO 400, 9 x 60 sec ISO 800, 2 x 30 sec ISO 800, all plus darks, no flats or bias. Stacked in Deep Sky Stacker, processed levels and curves in PS CS2. |

Lunar Eclipse Copyright Tony Surma-Hawes The total Lunar Eclipse on the 28th of August 2007 was starting to look like a non-event as cloud was hanging around in the afternoon and early at moonrise, however although the first few images were shot through some cloud, the evening cleared up to treat us with a deep eclipse. Vixen 102M f10, Canon 400D, various speeds, ISO 800, mounted on an EQ5. Images cropped and placed on an enlarged canvas to convey the shape and size of the Earth’s shadow. |

Lunar Eclipse Copyright Tony Surma-Hawes Another presentation of the total Lunar Eclipse August 28th 2007. As can be seen by the images from the 2 o’clock to 4 o’clock positions, the cloud hampered clear views in the earlier stages of the eclipse, however from before totality the cloud mercifully left us alone and we were treated to a great event. Vixen 102M f10, Canon 400D, various speeds, ISO 800, mounted on an EQ5. Images cropped, resized and placed on an enlarged canvas in PS CS2. |

The Pleiades - M45 Copyright Tony Surma-Hawes The conditions for this capture were very misty, and I am very pleased that it had not degraded the image to any great extent. Venus Transit Copyright Tony Surma-Hawes This was the closest I came to getting the "ink drop" effect. In hindsight I should have taken another 6 photos at this time. Again I am happy with the focus (and lull in the wind). Aperture was set at f4, which translates to f22, 1/250th of a second. Photo on Fuji Superia 400 film in a Ricoh KR-5 Super II, the lens is a TAIR-3S 300 mm lens, coupled with a three times tele-converter and a two times tele-converter giving an effective focal length of 1800 mm. |

Hydrogen Ballon - The Sun Copyright Tony Surma-Hawes The day after the Venus Transit I tried to capture the “Green Flash”. We were driving to Coral Bay after leaving Exmouth in Western Australia, and I had hoped to reach the coast before susnset. Unfortunately were just too far away, so we pulled over and climbed a sand dune and set up the tripod and camera. I used the same lens and teleconverter arrangement we used for the transit. In the days of emulsion, I had only 2 frames left (more back in the van, but likely to miss the event). This shot was taken just as the disk touched the ocean, and you can just see some green appearing on the upper limb. As the Sun slipped below the horizon, I watched the green increase, spread along the edge until it reached the ocean then spread along the flattened edge along the bottom of the disappearing Sun, all the while the upper edge was getting greener and widening. When the remainder of the Sun was completely limed with green, the colour spread over the whole remainder of the flattened disk and the colour intensified: the whole image blazed green and I fired the last shot with the shutter release... Unfortunately I was adjusting the aperture speed for best effect in the fading light and it was now set on bulb and it was horribly over exposed. This shot is a reminder of the “one that got away” and a promise that “One day...” |
